On 1 December we had a wonderful evening paying tribute to our late Patron, Victoria Wood, at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in York. People had come from as far as London and Glasgow to celebrate her life and work, and her enormously important contribution to Jessie’s Fund for 17 of our 21 years – until her untimely death in April.
Her close friend Daniel Rigby was a fantastic host, sharing very personal memories of her and even turning his hand to auctioneering. The brilliant She Productions company performed a selection of Victoria Wood’s sketches and songs: some were familiar, and others less well known, but Victoria shone through all of them.
After a tasty and ample supper, a raffle was drawn and the auction (including Victoria Wood memorabilia) took place. The evening, which had an almost tangible feeling of goodwill and love for Victoria, ended with the Ballad of Barry and Freda. Our thanks go to Daniel Rigby and She Productions for making it such a memorable and enjoyable occasion.
