We are delighted to have been chosen by Ann Acaster, the President of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland 2018-19, as the Association President’s Charity of the Year, and we look forward to working in partnership with her.
Inner Wheel is an International women’s organisation founded in 1923. You can read their interesting history here.
Ann chose Jessie’s Fund because she very much believes in our mission, which is to help children who have significant communication difficulties to express themselves through the power of music.
‘I am delighted to be able to support this most worthwhile charity. I hope to raise funds and awareness of Jessie’s Fund across the whole of Great Britain and Ireland through my fellow Inner Wheel members.’
The majority of children Jessie’s Fund works with are not able to speak, but music provides an alternative language, universally understood, which helps them to connect with the world around them. These children may be life-limited and spending time in a children’s hospice, they may be receiving treatment in hospital, they may have profound and multiple learning disabilities, or they might have significant special educational needs.
One of the programmes which Inner Wheel members in Great Britain and Ireland will be supporting is our Soundtracks work in special schools. This provides both a wonderful experience for students and training for staff: we share simple musical techniques with staff so that they can use music in the classroom every day, ensuring that our work has lasting impact.
In the words of one mum,
‘I have always found music to be a gateway into Archie’s world and one of the only ways to be able to communicate with him. The benefits to Archie are indescribable. It was wonderful to see all the children in Archie’s class also benefiting from the week that Jessie’s Fund were in the school, and also the way it motivated the teachers.’
And a teacher told us,
‘You’ve reminded me of how to be the kind of teacher I want to be. The school is changed by the music transformation, and won’t go back!’
Our thanks go to Ann for choosing to support Jessie’s Fund, and to all her fellow members who will be working hard to raise funds during 2018-19. It will make a huge difference to the number of children we will be able to help.
