Transforming power of music

What a transformation musical interaction can bring about in a short time: after a recent project, one of our musicians reported back to us:

‘We worked with a girl who had some challenging behaviour. When she arrived, she was obviously unsettled with the new situation, new faces. She has also only recently started attending the school. At the start of the session, she began to kick and lash out. The teaching assistant [TA] working with her had to hold her to calm her down. She carried on being distressed and lashing out at the TA, who dealt with the situation brilliantly. Gradually, she calmed down and began interacting with us via the drums. This carried on into a very focused session with her leading us in playing. The TA stayed throughout and very slowly backed away, giving her space and independence.’
