Alan, father of Jessie, was one of the founder members of the Fitzwilliam String Quartet. He remained as its only viola player up until September 2024, at which point he had already become the longest serving quartet player in Britain! He has held teaching posts at the University of York and the Royal Northern College of Music, as well as a residency at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by both Bucknell University (USA) and the University of York.
