Family music-making

Last year we started working with families at Hob Moor Oaks School and Children’s Service, in York. The sessions were for the parents, carers and children who are enrolled at the school and known to the Portage Service. Portage is a home visiting educational service for pre-school children with special needs. Specialist workers help parents to support their child’s learning.

The sessions were designed to be a fun and relaxed way of learning new songs and skills to make music at home. Activities centred around the voice, hand held percussion and included songs to help with stretching and co-ordination. The joy was palpable in every session, with parents telling us how much they looked forward to it each week, and how much their children were enjoying themselves.

Following the success of the first courses we are revisiting Hob Moor Children’s Centre – partnering once again with the Portage Service – this term.
